Your First Dental Visit And Reasons To Make An Appointment

Dentist Blog

If you need to go to the dentist for an exam and it's been a while since your last visit, then you may want to know how to best prepare. When you know what to expect at your first appointment, you will feel more at ease going into the office for that exam. Here is some information on what to expect as a new dental patient. Also, this article will cover some of the reasons why you want to go to a dentist and not put off that exam.

Prepare for the visit

When you are going to the dentist for a new patient visit, or if it has been a long time since your last visit, then you want to see about getting the paperwork ahead of time. When you are making the appointment ask if they can send the paperwork to you so you can have everything filled out when you go to the appointment.

Also, filling everything out at home means you will have access to things like your medications and other things you may need to completely fill out all the questions. Otherwise, you want to get to the office ahead of time in order to give yourself time to fill out the necessary forms and bring all necessary information with you.

Prepare for the exam

The dentist will give you a complete exam. This exam will consist of an oral exam where they will look in your mouth at all of your teeth, your gums, and even your tongue. Since the dentist is going to be looking for anything that is out of the ordinary and trying to determine the condition of your teeth and gums, you want to be careful with what you eat that day. Don't eat anything like red foods, as these will make it harder for the dentist to see what is going on due to staining.

The dentist is also going to take x-rays of your teeth. This can be a bit uncomfortable, especially if you have a smaller mouth, but it won't be painful, and it doesn't take too long to take the x-rays. These will show if you have issues with your teeth, including the roots.

Problems that should send you to the dentist

Some of the things that should indicate you need to get in to see the dentist right away include mouth pain, tooth pain, sores in the mouth that don't go away in a few days, a swollen mouth or jaw area, a chipped tooth, a cracked tooth, bleeding gums, or tooth sensitivity.
