Five Tips For Beating The Heat Without Destroying Your Teeth

Dentist Blog

The summer season is a time when everyone starts breaking out the ice cold lemonade, fresh berries, and other refreshing items to help everyone stay cool. However, some of these things can be damaging to your teeth, so it's important to consider these five tips to keep your teeth strong and healthy while also refreshing yourself:

  1. Drink More Water: Rather than constantly drinking iced teas, lemonades, and sports drinks, you should just drink more water. While it's okay to consume these other beverages every once in a while, it can be detrimental for your teeth. The reason being that these drinks not only contain a great deal of sugar, but are typically acidic, as well, which can damage the enamel of your teeth.
  2. Don't Eat the Ice: While it's okay to add ice to your drinks, you don't want to actually eat it. People break their teeth all the time from eating ice. If there is still ice in your glass, refill it with more of the drink you were drinking rather than being tempted to eat the ice.
  3. Be Mindful of Your Sensitive Teeth: If you have sensitive teeth, it can make consuming cold beverages difficult, uncomfortable, and even painful. If you know that you have sensitive teeth, you may consider talking to your dentist about getting a toothpaste that can help combat your sensitivity. This way, you can continue to stay cool in the summer without having to deal with teeth problems.
  4. Be Mindful of Berries: Berries, such as strawberries and blueberries can stain your teeth, so you want to be mindful of how you are eating these. It's best to rinse your mouth with water after consuming a handful of berries to prevent them from staining your teeth. You should also be brushing and flossing immediately after since the skin of the berries easily becomes lodged in between teeth, as well.
  5. Brush at the Right Time: Many people try to combat the effects of certain beverages and foods from staining or damaging their teeth by brushing right after consuming. However, the problem with this is that when you are brushing away acidic foods right away, the acidity is still left on your teeth, which can lead to you brushing it against the enamel, which can corrode it. Instead, you should wait at least 30 minutes before brushing.

When you consider these five tips, you can enjoy your summer without stressing about the affects any habits you may have are taking on your teeth. Visit a site like http://www.thefamilydentist-lakeland.com for more help.
