3 Ways You Can Adjust To Your New Dentures

Dentist Blog

Getting dentures after having little to no teeth for several years is a wonderful thing. However, going from no teeth to a mouth full of teeth is a big transition for most people. It is a huge learning curve and is something that will take time to adjust to. However, if you stick with it, you will find that wearing and using your dentures will become easier and easier. There are certain things that can be done to move the adjustment process along nicely, and this article will discuss 3 ways you can adjust to your new dentures.

Take The Time To Break Them In

When you first get your dentures, it is not recommended that you wear them all of the time. Instead, you are going to go through a period where you only wear the dentures for a designated amount of time during the day before you take them out. For example, you may start of with one hour in, one hour out, and then move up to two hours in and one hour out. This allows your gums and your jaw to adjust to the dentures at a rate that will not make them incredibly stiff and sore, and will also reduce the risk of having actual sores created in your mouth.

Start Off With Soft Foods

While your dentures are plenty strong enough to chew any food that you would like them to, they often chew food quite differently than regular teeth. You have to learn how to move your jaw correctly in order to properly chew the foods so they are mashed down enough before swallowing. The best way to learn how to chew foods with your dentures is to ease into it slowly. By starting off with soft foods, you require very little work from your dentures, thus allowing you to slowly get the hang of using them, without undue stress.

Practice Eating And Speaking At Home

If you are nervous about having others watch you eat food and speak with your dentures in because you feel that you may look funny when doing so, then you should start off by practicing at home. You can sit in front of a mirror if you would like so that you can see how you look. This gives you the privacy that you need to learn how to use your dentures properly, without worrying about what others think of you while doing so.
